Thunder Set for Sportsbet

Sportsbet sent me to Kyneton to shoot the 1000/1 Melbourne Cup shot “Thunder Set” as the Kempsey-trained runner begins its fairytale tilt at gaining a start in the race that stops a nation. Sportsbet have adopted the battler from the bush’s dream by paying the horse’s latest Melbourne Cup nomination fee. Country trainer Vince Jones has been dreaming of making it to Flemington on the first Tuesday of November for three decades as a trainer, and showing the rich overseas raiders a thing or two.

"Thunder Set" needed to win or place in the Bendigo Cup to give itself a chance of qualifying for the Melbourne Cup, unfortunately it finished well back in the field. AFL Grand Final

Another busy weekend, covering the CMUE 2015 Dexion Grand Final Eve Luncheon for the promoters, the 2015 Toyota AFL Grand Final for the Herald-Sun followed by the Hawthorn Family day at Glenferrie Oval for the Herald as well.

Corey McKernan's Ultimate Events runs the Dexion Grand Final Eve Luncheon each year, with over 800 guests attending to listen to the thoughts of AFL commentators, this year Michael Roberts and David King hosting the show, Matthew Lloyd, Tony Shaw, Mark Ricciutto and Sam Newman providing the special comments and humour.

Saturday's AFL Grand Final between Hawthorn and West Coast was unfortunately pretty much decided by quarter time. Although the Eagles had their chances in the second and third quarter inaccurate kicking and some basic errors meant they were never within striking distance of the Hawks, who went on to win their third premiership in a row. From a sports photography point of view though it is always good to shoot the Grand Final.

BMW 5 Series Update for BMW Australia Group

Lately i have been shooting a lot of motorbikes for Australian Motorcycle News and Motorcycle Trader which led to a commercial shoot covering the launch of the S 1000 XR for BMW. This in turn led to being asked to shoot an editorial coverage of the BMW M Series Update for BMW Australia Group. This comprised three parts, shooting four 5 Series models at Cardinia Reservoir, taking one vehicle home for the evening to do a night shoot and coverage of auto journalists driving the vehicles at Sandown Park.

The four 5 Series models comprised a 520d Sedan, the 535i Sedan, an M5 in Frozen Blue and the main car of interest, the M5 Nighthawk. We photographed all four models cornering and statics of both front and rear, with the weather conditions hampering us to get them finished on time.

The 5 Series model i got to take home, a $235,000 M5 Nighthawk is one of ten units to be made available for the Australian market. The 4.4 litre V8 twin-turbo petrol engine left me speechless, i would doubtless lose my licence within days if i kept this car! And apart from the awesome engine specs the sheer luxury of the interior is what won me over. From the full Merino leather upholstery to the multifunction seats, four zone climate control, TV functionality, glass sunroof and Alcantara roof lining.

That evening i took the car to Melbourne Docklands for a shoot underneath the Bolte Bridge and the following morning before returning the vehicle a quick shoot on the Maribyrnong River in Footscray. The matte black finish of the car made shooting at night fairly difficult, having to overexpose the background to put any detail into the car.

The final part of the shoot was at Sundown where local motoring journalists got to throw both the Nighthawk and the M5 Frozen Blue around the track for the morning. The images have been used by Motoring.com.au, CarsGuide, Motormag and Wheels Magazine .

BMW S 1000 XR launch for BMW Aust Ltd at Kingscliff

BMW Group Australia gave me the opportunity to cover the launch of the S 1000 XR motorbike over three days out of Kingscliff on the Tweed Coast in NSW. Flying in to Coolangatta it is a short drive to Kingscliff and the luxury of Peppers Salt Resort & Spa http://www.peppers.com.au/salt/  where we were based.

Monday morning a semi arrived carrying the motorbikes to be ridden the following two days by journalists from Rapid Bikes, MotorCycle Trader, Australian Road Rider, Australian Motorcyclist Magazine, Cycle Torque, Australian Motor Cycle News, Freelancers and Masterchef judge and motorbike enthusiast Gary Mehigan. Mid morning I set off following the BMW crew to check out the course and find locations suitable for shooting the new bike. We covered probably 500kms of outback NSW and Queensland before returning to base.

From BMW's Australian website a short description of the bike:   Following on from the S 1000 RR and HP4 superbikes as well as the S 1000 R roadster, BMW Motorrad is now unveiling the fourth member in the BMW Motorrad line-up of high-power motorcycles with inline-4-cylinder engines and a distinctly sporty bias. Building on the tantalising and unique mix of innovative technology, performance and safety already inherent to the existing models in this series, BMW Motorrad has taken the next step by bringing out the S 1000 XR, which offers this repertoire of core characteristics in a brand-new blend dubbed “adventure sport”. This encompasses dynamic touring qualities, sporty performance and high levels of comfort as well as outstanding everyday usability. In short, the new S 1000 XR serves up its own individual mix of sporting and touring flair at the same time as injecting a generous dose of emotion.

So Tuesday the group set out towards Murwillumbah through the cane fields along the Tweed River, then towards Kyogle and then on to the famous Lions Road. In 1969 the NSW government rejected the building of a connection road between NSW and QLD north of Kyogle, the local community led by the Lions Club decided to do it themselves. A 50km world class scenic drive is the result. From Rathdowney we headed towards the nights accommodation at Mt Barney Lodge,  home made pizza out of a wood fired oven, using fresh local ingredients and cooked by true Italians. Beer and red wine was supplied also! http://www.mtbarneylodge.com.au

Wednesday morning it was up early with bacon and eggs cooked on the bbq before heading off back down Lions Road and eventually returning to Kingscliff, packing the bags and heading home before a massive edit of raw files, 117GB to be precise. The following gallery is a selection of images from the event shot by MDPhotography.  http://www.mdphotography.com.au
