Red Bull Athletes

Recently had the opportunity to photograph three Red Bull sponsored athletes, Alex Pullin, Jessica Fox and Ryder Lawson. A studio was set up in the boardroom of Red Bull and approximately twenty minutes allocated with each athlete, to shoot a portrait and also an image showcasing their individual sport.

AFL Western Bulldogs v Sydney Swans

What more can you say about Lance Franklin? He didn't dominate the game, it probably wasn't one of his better matches, his opponent Dale Morris did a fair job on him and it wasn't a great game from Sydney overall. Having said all this Buddy still kicked six goals and threatened to kick many more! This week under the roof at Etihad using the 1Dx and the 200-400 F4 lens i shot the game at 6400 ISO. Results are pretty amazing, quality of the files at hi ISO now are so good. Once again working for AAP, full set of images can be viewed at http://one.aap.com.au

AFL Kangaroos v Western Bulldogs

Another AFL game at Etihad, but with a difference.............a Sunday afternoon game with the roof open. From a photographers point of view it was great to be shooting a game in daylight for a change, and using the new Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM you can cover most of the ground with the focal length from 200 right through to 560mm with the internal 1.4 extension convertor in use. Still getting used to the "balance" of the lens, and it is probably a stop too slow for matches played under lights, but an extremely versatile addition. Working at the match for AAP, all images available for viewing at http://one.aap.com.au

AFL Essendon v West Coast

In a must win game for both teams the skill level was poor to say the least, many turnovers, very few targets being hit and therefore from a photographic point of view not many highlights from the game. The first image of the Bombers walking up the players race for the pre-match warm up was shot on the Canon 1Dx using the off camera remote ST-E3_RT and three Canon 600EX-RT speed lights , one positioned head on to light the players, one from slightly behind camera left to give a little rim light and the third from behind directed at the wording on the banner to make it "jump" in the picture. All three flashes were at manual power settings. Working at the match for AAP, all images can be seen at http://one.aap.com.au

AFL Kangaroos v Geelong Cats

The Geelong Cats did just enough to defeat the Kangaroos and celebrate the 250 game milestone for James Kelly. The highlight of the match was the huge leap and attempt to mark by the Kangaroos Lindsay Thomas, and the spectacular return to the ground. Shooting with the Canon EOS 1DX there were 11 frames to choose from, here is my selection of the best six.
